Be a part of our family!

Steel City Men’s Chorus relies on the support of individuals and businesses to fulfill its mission and make a difference. It is only with the financial support of our generous donors, the hours donated by our “Fifth Section” (non-singing members), and the services and gifts of professional supporters, that we are able to entertain and impact our community.

While SCMC weathered the pandemic when other organizations did not, we still need your support. The pandemic and the resulting economic downturn continue to strain arts and community organizations across the U.S. In addition to the increasing costs and decreasing number of venues, many arts organizations report as much as 30% drops in attendance and support compared to pre-pandemic times. As a volunteer organization with only two part-time employees, it takes significant time, effort, and money for SCMC to exist and perform. More and more, it seems that there is an epidemic of loneliness and a decrease in community connectivity across the world. With your support, we continue to bring quality shows and LGBTQ+ community involvement throughout the region, our state, and beyond.

Individual donations may be one time donations or monthly recurring donations. You may make your financial gift through PayPal, by check, or you may contact us to arrange a credit card transaction. Checks may be mailed to:

Greetings!

On behalf of the Steel City Men’s Chorus, the SCMC Board would like to express our deepest gratitude for the unwavering support of the Birmingham community from our first performance through our most recent 10th season!

This commitment to our organization inspires us as we embark on more exciting endeavors in Season 11!

Season 10 ended with two shows in early 2023. Our show, “Two Boys Kissing,” presented on March 18, 2023, at Workplay, addressed important LGBTQ+ themes. Despite the challenges of banned literature, we hosted a pre-show panel with the author of the novel of the same name, the composer, and local leaders, fostering crucial conversations. On June 9, 2023, at Workplay, we celebrated Pride with our show “Still Singing Strong and Proud,” featuring a brand-new commissioned piece, “Our Greatest Fans.”

In addition to our shows, the generosity of our supporters enabled us to participate in various community events, including performing the National Anthem for Birmingham Barons’ baseball, performing for Central Alabama Pride, sponsoring games at Birmingham Aids Outreach (BAO) bingo, and serving at the Woodlawn location of Community Kitchens. We also actively took part in Crestwood Crawl, raising funds for Birmingham Aids Outreach (BAO) and making a positive impact on our local community. We plan on continuing those traditions throughout Season 11.

Season 11 started with our second annual Black & White Ball, held at Workplay on November 11, 2023. It was a glamorous affair with a dance floor, a live auction, and food and drink with a delightful “splash of Pink”.

Our first concert of Season 11 was our Holiday Extravaganza – “Heart to Heart & Hand in Hand” held at the BJCC Theater on December 9, 2023. Our heartwarming and hilarious show featured special guests like Steel City Swing, the Salty Hams, and the debut of the new quartet Codachrome. We were honored to host the Artistic Director and a singing member of Krakofonia, an LGBTQ+ chorus from Krakow, Poland, during our Holiday show. This international connection was due to the support of an individual donor, and we look forward to future collaborations with this exciting mixed-voice chorus!

Our second concert of Season 11 was our spring show, “Together We Rise,” sponsored by David Reynolds and Robert John Holmes, on May 10 and 11 at the Virginia Samford Theatre. It was wonderful evening of funny and uplifting songs shared with boisterous and receptive audience.

On June 14, we held, #NOFILTER, at Saturn. #NOFILTER was a cabaret show featuring community performers Jan Hunter, Pink Box Burlesque, Lee Smith, Holley Wesley, Michael Lamar Busbin, Codachrome, as well as members of SCMC.

In July 2024, the Steel City Men’s Chorus represented our community and state at the GALA Festival, a gathering of LGBTQ+ choruses from around the country held, this year, in Minneapolis.

We thank you for your support and your consideration. Your generous tax-deductible contributions will have a long-lasting impact on SCMC and our greater community.
